Feed your food bin and win

Recycling food waste is a great way to help the environment, so West of England Local Authorities are offering residents prizes for using their food bins.

Christmas is a time of giving, so Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire councils are giving away some superb prizes just for recycling your food.

Reuse and recycling is especially important at Christmas, as we produce more waste at this time than at any other point during the year

As part of the Feed Me and Win campaign, the councils have been giving away a £50 voucher each week to someone in their area who has put their food out for recycling.

From 8 to 23 December each Council is giving away twelve extra daily prizes worth up to £70, with double value prizes coming in January.

All you need to do is put your food bin out for recycling by 7am on your usual collection day, making sure they can match it to your property (you may want to label it), and you could win a choice of local prizes, including spa vouchers, a brewery tour, a junior zoo keeper encounter, and cookery classes.

Even if you just have teabags or bones left over to recycle, it all helps.

Your council recycles food into electricity and fertiliser, which is much better than sending it to the landfill.

Recycling is a cheaper process, and food in landfill produces gases which can contribute to climate change as it rots down.

It is time to change our relationship with waste, and we need to get everyone on board to make this a reality

Councillor Daniella Radice, Bristol’s Assistant Mayor for Neighbourhoods, said:

“Separating out food waste is one of the best ways to help the environment, so I am delighted that Bristol has joined up with the other local authorities in the area to participate in this reward scheme.

“This project gives people an incentive to change their habits, which is often hard to do.

“Reuse and recycling is especially important at Christmas, as we produce more waste at this time than at any other point during the year.

“Reducing waste will reduce climate change.

“It is time to change our relationship with waste, and we need to get everyone on board to make this a reality.”

If you want to get started and need a container you can contact your council.
