UWE launches free sustainability course

On Monday 14 September 2015, the University of the West of England is launching “Our Green City”, a free online course that will give an overview of current environmental and social challenges faced by cities across the world, while inspiring action in local issues.

Funded by Bristol 2015 and Bristol City Council, Our Green City aims to tackle global challenges within Bristol.

The course is open to everyone and doesn’t require any prior learning.

It is designed to encourage participation and enable people to learn about what they can do to make their city more sustainable.

Each of the six weeks of the course will focus on a new global challenge, presented by a range of academic contributors and organisations:

• Week 1 – Introduction to Sustainable Cities

• Week 2 – Energy

• Week 3 – Food

• Week 4 – Nature

• Week 5 – Waste

• Week 6 – Transport

Each week follows similar structure, from watching videos and presentations to taking part in quizzes and discussion forums and completing a weekly task.

Participants should spend one to three hours a week studying on the course, which was designed to be completed around other time commitments.

There will be opportunities to win badges at key points during the course, and a certificate will be awarded to each participant on completion.

Over 1,000 people have already enrolled on the course.

For those unable to complete the course this September, it will be running again in January 2016.
