Skanska uses recycling to shine a light for Bristol BMXers

The construction company recycled six of their lighting columns after a local Bristol BMX club needed help lighting their track.

Bristol BMX Club has implemented numerous improvements to their track at Patchway and were looking to install floodlighting to enable year-round use and evening training sessions.

Area 2, the Highways team at Skanska, had six surplus lighting columns: four arising from its work widening the slip road at Junction 16 of the M5, and a further two which needed removing in order for speed camera trials to take place.

“It’s very fitting that during Skanska’s sponsorship of Bristol as European Green Capital 2015 we’re putting these surplus columns to good use and also helping encourage young people to cycle and stay healthy.”

Nigel Tomlinson, Area 2’s Business Director at Skanska said:

“We were only too pleased to help out with this worthwhile project.

The Bristol BMX club has more than 200 active members aged from 4 to 50 and are the current South West Regional Champions.

Skanska will now be working with them to install each column and to ensure the lights are fully operational in time for the winter training season.

“This was a really great gesture from Skanska and a fantastic team effort.

“Once installed, these lighting columns will enable many more BMXers to use these excellent facilities all year round.”
