Don't miss the last Make Sunday Special of the summer

Since May you may have noticed an invasion of art, music, markets, and performers lining the streets of Bristol on the first Sunday of each month. Sadly, this Sunday sees the last event of the year, so we're looking back on the summer's fun, and at what to expect this weekend in Avonmouth Park.

The Make Sunday Special programme was launched by Mayor George Ferguson, who was inspired by similar weekend activities in Bordeaux.

For the first time this year Make Sunday Special branched out into Bristol neighbourhoods such as Easton, Avonmouth, Hartcliffe and Bedminster, and have involved some of the Bristol 2015 Neighbourhood Arts Projects that exist this year.

Mayor Ferguson said:

“The rollout of Make Sunday Special into Bristol’s neighbourhoods has been a real success and I hope very much communities will be inspired to get involved next year.”

We have been overjoyed at the energy, humour and enthusiasm which has gone into the designing and building of the four Giants.

Some of the highlights from past events include Bedminster’s own “Green Prix” racing event, Corn Street’s Faitrade festival celebrating Bristol’s 10th anniversary as a Fairtrade City, and Hartcliffe’s Make Sunday Special which included music, ferret racing, fire circus shows, paint fights, and scribble robots. See the gallery above for photos from these and the other neighbourhoods.

The last Make Sunday Special event will take place on 6 September on Avonmouth Road adjacent to Avonmouth Park. Organised by Avonmouth Community Centre and a team of local residents the free outdoor event will run from 11am to 4pm, and will feature live music from local bands, cycling activities, a climbing wall, archery, retro makeovers, and last but not least the big reveal of four Goram Giants.

What are Goram giants?

This community arts project is firmly rooted in local folk law and the legend of Goram and Vincent, the Bristol giants who competed for the same lady’s hand in marriage.

This summer artists have been rummaging with residents of Avonmouth, Lawrence Weston, Sea Mills, and Shirehampton for recycled materials to create four traditional Goram giant sculptures to represent these four villages.

The Giants will be paraded around at the Avonmouth Make Sunday Special, before battling it out at 2pm for the title of the real Goram giant. They’ll be puppeteered by residents and accompanied by renowned storyteller Martin Maudsley.

Alan May, one of the artists who has been working on the project, said:

“We have been overjoyed at the energy, humour and enthusiasm which has gone into the designing and building of the four Giants. Our participants have shown great invention in their designs and their search for appropriate recycled materials.”
