‘Where Two Roads Meet’ by Karen Hayes & Barbara Disney.

‘Where Two Roads Meet’ used recycling and reuse arts practices to examine Eastville and express what it’s like to live and work there. The project produced a giant community ‘Domesday’ book, now kept in Fishponds Library, which invites the wider community to discover Eastville and allows residents’ voices to be heard. Another outcome was the series of public enamel panels which celebrate the identity of this community and its connection to the rest of Greater Fishponds. These panels are installed near to where the engagement arts workshops took place as a lasting reminder of the project.
Karen Hayes is a specialist in verbatim text-making. She works as a poet and librettist in a variety of community settings including people with dementia and those with special needs. Barbara Disney is an expert in community print-making and enamelling. She has many years of experience as a visual artist using socially engaged practice.
- 14 workshops
- 326 residents and school children directly engaged
- A community book and 6 public enamel panels to remain as a permanent legacy of the project for the community

***NEWS UPDATE*** 24th November
What happens now?
This event marks the end of the Where Two Roads Meet neighbourhood project but the Eastville Domesday Book, containing drawings and poems created during the series of summer workshops, and enamels panels will remain as a permanent legacy of the project. The book will be kept in Fishponds Library so that members of the public can come and see it at their leisure. The enamel panels will be installed in various places across Eastville and Fishponds near where the workshops occurred – at The Haven, Glenfrome School, May Park School, Fishponds Library, Elmtree Farm – and will be in situ by the end of the year.

***NEWS UPDATE*** 21st October
On Tursday 19th November from 1.30pm – 3pm, there will be an opportunity to see all the artworks in one place at Fishponds Library.
The artists, all those involved in the project and residents of Eastville and Greater Fishponds are invited to come together to celebrate all that has been achieved. More details to follow soon, but make sure you save the date!

We are delighted to announce that Barbara and Karen will be hosting another public workshop as part of Where Two Roads Meet.
Come along to Elm Tree Farm on Thursday 17th September 10am – 2pm to get stuck into some craft-based arts and tell your tales of living, working or walking through Eastville to poet Karen Hayes.

Some lovely work went on at The Haven, Clay Bottom Allotments, this weekend. If you missed Karen and Barbara at Eastville Park today, make sure you make their final workshop-walk next Tuesday 25th August.

This Sunday, 16th August, Karen and Barbara will be hosting a public workshop at The Haven, Claybottom Allotments from 1.30 – 3pm. Make sure you go along and get stuck in with visual crafts and the odd bit of poetry.
The words and images you make will become contributions to a community book for Eastville and Greater Fishponds, and also a series of beautiful enamel plaques.

If you find yourself at the Islamic Cultural Fayre on Sunday 2nd August, make sure you visit Karen and Barbara’s stall. They’ll be there with artsy activities for you to drop in and try your hand at.
But if you miss them on Sunday, panic not. Join one of their creative walks through Fishponds and Eastville this August. The walks are at a leisurely pace and will get you inspired about the area so you’re primed and ready for the creative workshop at the final destination. See the flyer below for details…

Barbara and Karen will be at the Old Tram Shed in Eastville on Saturday 25th July getting creative. They will be able to tell you all about the Eastville project and how to get involved. Drop in between 12 and 6pm to find out what’s going on and you’ll get the opportunity to check out this amazing community space.

Upcycle/donate enamel to this project. Do you have any stove enamel, particularly white doors off of old style ovens? Or any unwanted or chipped enamel plates, spoons, teapots and other domestic ware? Get in touch if you do.

Barbara & Karen have run workshops in May Park & Glenfrome Primary Schools. Below are some of the pics from their first workshops. The children were asked to imagine the route to school making maps, using ‘oldskool’ sustainable drawing equipment, dips pens and quills. What were the things they saw on the way – nice and nasty. They were drawing on recycled paper – inc old envelopes. Check out the NAP Facebook Page for more.

What will a neighbourhood arts project look like for Greater Fishponds?
- The project has been shaped from what we heard from individual residents, community groups and local businesses.
What’s happened so far?
Since September 2014 we’ve been consulting people living in the neighbourhood area to find out:
- what issues need addressing in terms of the green agenda
- particular areas that would be great to have an arts project
- specific community groups or members of the community an artist, maker or facilitator should work with – ie schools, unemployed or older people
How have we engaged with this area? Well, we’ve…
- talked at the neighbourhood partnership and local forum meetings
- been working closely with Bristol City Council’s Neighbourhood & Community Development teams
- met with community leaders, groups and individuals
- been busy on social media
- left flyers in community buildings
- held a public consultation meeting on the 13th January at Fishponds Library & Morrison’s foyer
- held a Creative Brainstorming drop in session on Saturday 7th March for artists to talk to the NAP team
What are the next steps?

The artist/maker or facilitators brief has been publicised for 6 weeks. The commission is for £10,000 which includes all project fees, materials & expenses, although volunteers may be provided to assist on the project. See the brief below:
