Bristol Pound CIC is a not for profit organisation that runs the Bristol Pound (£B) local currency scheme in partnership with Bristol Credit Union. The £B scheme is a pioneering project: the first city-wide local currency in the UK and the largest of its kind in Europe, the first local currency that can be used to pay local taxes, and the first to partner with a local financial institution – Bristol Credit Union.
Launched in September 2012, the £B scheme is a tool for the people of Bristol to increase their support for local independent businesses, grow their community connections and help to forge a greener, more resilient local economy.
Every Bristol Pound, whether paper or digital, represents a commitment to spending local which gets passed on every time a Bristol Pound is recirculated – as a payment to a business, as wages to a member of staff, as change to a customer in a local shop, or as local taxes to Bristol City Council. The scheme is not for profit, run for the benefit of its members and for Bristol and the surrounding region.
The successful implementation and sharing of the Bristol Pound model supports:
• Locally owned independent businesses.
• A strengthening of community life across all sectors of society.
• A greener, more resilient local economy
• New local independent businesses in Bristol.
• The development of other community currency schemes across the UK.
As an organisation, we have a deep commitment to sustainable practices in everything we do. In particular, £B CIC encourages use of Bristol Pounds through local procurement as much as possible.
When the weather is nice, we make a concerted effort to spend time outdoors in nearby Castle Park, and our entire team are committed cyclists – even those of us who lives several miles away!
• Every member of the £B team receives a portion of their wages in Bristol Pounds.
• Bristol Pound CIC is a proud member of the West of England Carbon Challenge, now known as Go Green Bristol.
• Every member of staff travels to work by foot, by bike or by bus.
